Meet your Region  1  Director & Assistant Director

UAW Region 1 is led by Director LaShawn English and Assistant Director Raymond Pecoraro, whose leadership reflects a shared commitment to representing members, strengthening solidarity, and advancing the mission of the UAW. Together, they work closely to support local unions, advocate for members, and ensure that the needs of working families remain at the forefront of Region 1 initiatives.

Their partnership combines leadership, experience, and a member-focused approach to addressing challenges, building stronger communities, and creating opportunities for growth across Region 1. Through collaboration and open communication, they remain committed to empowering members and strengthening the union at every level.

Director LaShawn English provides strategic leadership and oversight for UAW Region 1, focusing on member engagement, advocacy, organizing efforts, and strengthening union initiatives throughout the region.

 

Assistant Director Raymond Pecoraro supports the region’s operations by working directly with local unions, assisting with representation efforts, strengthening communication, and ensuring members receive the support and resources needed to succeed.

Financial Empowerment Initiatives

Introduced programs focused on financial literacy and long-term success, including education on homeownership, investments, financial independence, and economic empowerment for members and their families.
 

Strong Member Visibility & Engagement

Built a strong presence throughout Region 1 through plant visits, local meetings, educational events, organizing drives, retiree activities, and community outreach efforts, strengthening connections with members across all sectors.
 

Community & Solidarity Efforts

Supported member and community initiatives through outreach events, food drives, council activities, veterans programs, health initiatives, and family-focused events that strengthened solidarity beyond the workplace.
 

Building the Future of Region 1

Focused on creating a Region 1 that is visible, member-driven, educational, community-focused, and prepared for the future of the workforce.

Historic Leadership

In December 2022, LaShawn English made history as the first woman and first woman of color elected Director of UAW Region 1 through the union’s first direct election process, marking a significant milestone for Region 1 and the UAW.
 

Organizing Growth & Expansion

Region 1 expanded organizing efforts into emerging industries and workplaces, including online gaming, EV facilities, education, supplier plants, logistics, and community-based sectors. These efforts helped broaden union representation and reach new generations of workers.
 

Member Education & Leadership Development

Expanded educational opportunities for members through leadership development workshops, grievance and arbitration training, collective bargaining education, media training, and political education programs designed to strengthen member engagement and leadership skills.
